Review: Tropic Thunder

I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so hard and so frequently (The Avengers came close) in my life because of a movie. Tropic Thunder is a work of genius! The ensemble cast was great – honorary mention: Tom Cruise, who’ve I’ve never liked – and the storyline was hilarious, although a bit unbelievable.  It’s basically about a group of self-absorbed actors (although I think one of them is a rapper of some sort) who are trying to make a movie called Tropic Thunder. Of all the actors Kirk (Downey Jr.) is the only acclaimed one and has won a lot of Oscars; he’s playing a black guy in the movie. Tugg (Stiller) is an action movie has-been and Jack Black’s character is a comedian who wants to be taken seriously.

They end up somewhere not Vietnam (where they were supposed to be) and get attacked by the thugs of a local drug lord. Who is about ten years old. In the beginning, they assume they’re still shooting the movie, but in the end they realize that this is real life. And we get a glimpse into their hopes and dreams, their fears and insecurities.

I thought Robert Downey Jr. was hilarious as a ‘dude, playing a dude, disguised as another dude.’ His Australian accent was very good and I could totally buy him being an Australian. The only thing that bothered me about that were his blue eyes. They were a little bit too blue. It was kind of creepy. Ben Stiller and Matthew McConaughey were great as the agent and actor who are also friends. Rick Peck’s unexpected and genuine feelings for his client and friend were heartwarming.

I could go on for ages about how much I loved this movie, but you just have to go and see for yourself. The movie is hilarious and I would certainly recommend it for a movie night with friends. It will surprise you.
