Another great movie with great performances from Val Kilmer, Robert Downey Jr. and Michelle Monaghan. Now if you’ve ever read my blog posts about movies with Robert Downey Jr. before, you’ll know I love the guy to death. (Not like how I like Jensen Ackles as an actor, but close enough.) Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is about Harry (RDJ), a petty thief stumbling into an acting audition, who gets himself into trouble alongside a gay private eye (Perry) and his high school crush (Harmony).
Harry narrates during the movie – in a very funny way – and even pauses the movie every once in a while. He doesn’t paint things prettier than they are. He’s also painfully honest about himself and his failings. His involvement with this ‘case’ where he’s both fake PI and fake actor and where he’s being framed for a murder, is frankly hilarious. Val Kilmer and Michelle Monaghan complete the amazing and great team. Their performances were great and realistic.
I had only seen Val Kilmer in Alexander (with Colin Farrell and Angelina Jolie), but the role he has here is so very different from playing the father of Alexander the Great. He gave a very enjoyable performance as a PI who doesn’t want to show that he actually has a big heart.
Michelle Monaghan was a complete stranger to me and so I had no expectations whatsoever. Her acting was a pleasant surprise and her story seemed very plausible. Her chemistry with Robert Downey Jr. was clearly felt. The three of them had great chemistry and after watching the bloopers, it seems like they had a very great time making this movie.
I would certainly recommend Kiss Kiss Bang Bang for a movie night with friends. It has made me laugh many a time and the characters felt very real to me. It will certainly provide you with an enjoyable evening, with all the action and intrigue going on.
