Author

I’ve always known books were my passion, and it stands to reason I’d want to work in the book publishing industry as well, either as an editor, a book seller or as a Fantasy author.

I grew up reading – and being read to – ever since my mother taught me the alphabet. I was three when I started reading on my own, and pretty soon I was wrapped up in the fairy tales of old written by the brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen my grandmother had stashed somewhere at her house. Whenever I could, I’d snuggle up in a corner and read. Soon after that I moved on to mythology – mostly Greek and Celtic – and history. Fantasy novels were the next logical step. I was twelve when I read Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings for the first time.

In December 2010, I started volunteering for hellokpop.com – a Korean news phenomenon that is home to more than 250,000 readers monthly – as a writer. A few years later I was also given the role of editor and my writing spot was upgraded to senior writer. I even did my first bachelor’s thesis on hellokpop. I worked for hellokpop.com until March, 2017.

In my spare time, I’m flexing my writing skills by working on short stories, novellas and novels in the Fantasy genre, hoping to be published one day.

The blog is mainly about my life, my writing and my opinions. The reviews I post are meant to be short and snappy. No in-depth reflections, no exploration of themes and most importantly, no to very little spoilers. (Though there may be some book reviews that go a little deeper, because they were originally university assignments)

I chose to write my reviews like this, because they’re meant to only be opinions, only subjective, only recommendations, and my feelings about the subject should be clear at a glance. Once I start delving in, things turn out like academic papers instead, and I want my blog to have a light tone. If you want to read more, read the book, watch the movie/series or play the game.

So, embrace and enjoy the randomness that is me!

I want to pursue a major in creative writing, and eventually become a fiction writer, but my question is, besides teaching english (which I NEVER picture myself doing), what is there for someone with a creative writing degree to do before they have written any books. My mom says a degree in creative writing is like signing up to work at Starbuck’s until i get published, is this the case?.

    • I don’t know exactly what a major in creative writing entails, as I’ve got a major in editing and media production (I could only minor in creative writing and in the end went for book production instead) but I think any publishing jobs would probably be a safe bet? Also copywriting could be a viable choice. I think you should ask people who have such a major or people from the university/college you’d like to attend.

To be a fiction writer you don’t have to have a major in creative writing. You just have to write.

    • To be honest I don’t know. My major was media, information and communication and was mostly focused on editing and media production. But I think creative writing can get you into publishers, literary agencies and perhaps other “book” industries. Good luck!
